Mark Evans Update

Seattle, WA :
U-8 Llumar Window Film Unlimited Hydroplane driver N. Mark Evans continues his recovery from a serious accident at the 2003 Gold Cup in Detroit, MI in August. Evans visited the U-8 shop on January 9th to look over the wintertime progress on his valiant steed and spoke of his condition.

"In mid-December the doctors removed the titanium rod and 4 screws from my lower leg. The bone is healing up nicely and no long-term problems are expected. I have been fighting a major staph infection in my lower leg and the doctors felt it best to remove all of the hardware to help this situation. I had a stint installed in my arm and have been administering large doses of antibiotics every 8 hours. Last week the doctors were pleased with the condition of the infection and removed my stint and now I am only taking antibiotics orally." Evans continued, "Next week I go see the specialist again and there is a good chance that they will decide to remove my cast and I can begin physical therapy right away."

The boat is destroyed.
The boat sinks in Mission Bay.
The LLumar Window Film WINS in San Diego!
.... in that order!

San Diego, California:
The words of Bill Wurster came true "We are going to win this thing."
The U-8 boat owned by Bill Wurster was badly damaged on Friday and unable to race, the LLumar Window Film name and sponsorship were transferred over to the U-3 hull owned by Ed Cooper and the new red LLumar wins the race.

Absolutley incredible that after a heart breaking weekend, the LLumar Window Film wins deck to deck racing in San Diego. U-3, owned by Ed Cooper and driven by Mitch Evans, was the boat to beat and they proved that fact. The crew of the U-3 set up the boat perfect for the San Diego race course and Mitch Drove a flawless race beating all other contenders in a hot field of boats. The piston engine and this salt water race course get along with each other and provides an ideal chance for a win.

At an average speed of 146+ mph the red Miss LLumar was approximately 2 mph faster than the closest contender, the Miss Budweiser. The U-3 Miss Llumar Window Film would take the early lead and fend off challenges first from the U-2 Miss Trendwest then the U-1 Miss Budweiser. Piston power would not be denied as Mitch proved victorious here on Mission Bay.

Bill Wurster was on the beach, cell phone in hand providing Mitch's brother Mark Evans, a play by play of the racing action. Everyone around could hear Mark yelling over the phone and roaring engines as his brother Mark won the event.

Promises were made and will be kept!

San Diego, California: To quote Bill Wurster, owner of the U-8, “We promised our sponsor CP Films and Llumar Window Film that we would race in every 2003 event and that’s exactly what will happen, with or without the U-8.
After discussions with several of the other boat owners, the crew of the U-8 decided that the Llumar Window Film name will be transferred over to the U-3, the World’s fastest piston powered unlimited and the second fastest qualifier at 159+ mph. The U-3 is owned by Ed Cooper and driven by Mitch Evans. Yep - the brother of Mark Evans the U-8's injured driver who was forced to stay at home at the..."request"... of his doctor.

The World’s fastest piston boat has a great chance to win in San Diego, and it’s fitting that they should fly with our sponsors name. The Llumar Window Film people have been great to us and this sport, it was only fitting that we do everything possible to make them proud of the boat that bears their name.

The U-3 and U-8 were the boats to beat in San Diego, so if we can't beat them with our hull, we will join them and make this a great race for the fans of the LLumar Window Film. "Think what a winning combination this will make, Ed Cooper's crew, Mitch Evans, help from the U-8 crew and the sponsor LLumar Window Film. together we are going to win this thing!"

Ready to Rock and Roll but the Racing Gods thought otherwise!
Miss LLumar Window Film has a problem!

San Diego, California: The crew of the Miss LLumar Window Film Racing Team, did an amazing thing, in less than two weeks they put the boat back together, as good as new, drove to San Diego and put the boat in the water ready for Friday afternoon qualifying. Nate Brown's warm up lap was 155+ mph a mile per hour slower than the Budweiser (that had tried to go faster in 4 previous laps). After completing the warm up lap, Nate and the crew chief Scott Raney decided it was time to let the lady in yellow out for a run at full throttle.

Upon entering the first turn, a portion of the prop let go and pieces started flying. Based on our cursory examination it appears that the out of balance prop broke the rear strut (holding the long shaft), swung wildly across the rear of the boat and stopped abruptly stuck in the bottom of the hull. However, the engine was still turning the shaft at 8,000 rpm. The shaft became a pretzel - 2' shorter and 2' wider. The out of balance shaft rotated at least 8 more times, ripping out the bottom of the boat creating a 3' x 6' hole, struck the bottom of the engine, and brought the engine and gear box to an abrupt stop - resulting in massive destruction. Before the rescue crew could arrive the boat sank up to the cockpit in Mission Bay. To say that the crew, driver, owner and fans were dejected would be an understatement.

Nate Brown takes the seat for the Washington Mutual Thunderboat Regatta

Seattle, Washington: The U-8 Racing Team and several hard working volunteers have been working day and night to repair the tremendous damage suffered when Mark Evans blew over in the Detroit Gold Cup Race on August 24th, 2003. The boat sustained major fractures in several places to the hull and frame, which required the replacement of most of the deck. The boat returned to Seattle on August 29th giving the U-8 Racing Team just 17 days to complete the repairs including painting and vinyl for the entire hull.

Special thanks to all the teamwork put in by the volunteers that came to help the U-8 Racing Team. We would like to especially thank our associate sponsors Alan Bailey with AKZO NOBEL-Sikkens Paint Company from Detroit Michigan, and Bill Davis and Greg Pogue at Messenger Corporation, vinyl signage in Seattle for providing the new materials to complete the repairs. Without everyone's help this rebuild would not have happened.

The U-8 Racing Team and Owner Bill Wurster have announced the Nate Brown will be taking the seat for Mark Evans for the Washington Mutual Thunderboat Regatta September 19th-21. Nate Brown graciously accepted to drive for the U-8 Racing Team and owner Bill Wurster following the announcement from Eric Ellstrom that the Miss Elam Plus would not be making the San Diego race following the damage suffered at the Detroit Gold Cup race. Due to the time constrictions and repairs necessary to complete the hull it would not be race ready in time.

"I am looking forward to helping out a great friend Mark Evans," said Nate, I know if the table was turned, he would do it for me." Nate Brown Piloted the U-8 Racing Team and LLumar Window Film in 1998 -1999. The U-8 Racing team and Mark Evans during his recovery are glad to have Nate Brown step in to help!

Mark Evans recovery contunues

Detroit, Michigan: U-8 Llumar Window Film hydroplane driver Mark Evans continues his recovery from a blow over accident at the 2003 Gold Cup in Detroit on Sunday, August 24th. Mark is still at Detroit’s Receiving Hospital under observation for his leg and back injuries.

On Wednesday August 27th, Evans underwent a small surgical procedure to counteract a medical condition called “Deep Vein Thrombosis.” This condition occurs when blood clots form in the leg and then travel to the heart, lungs or brain. “DVT” left untreated can cause pain, dizziness, loss of consciousness, stroke, heart attack, permanent paralysis, and even death.

Another milestone has been reached in Marks recovery. A back brace was fitted on Wednesday evening that allowed Mark to sit up in his hospital bed and eventually take some steps with the help of his wife Elaine and the hospital staff. Check the U-8 website for continued updates on Marks recovery.

Mark Evans suffers a horrific flip on the Detroit River

Detroit, Michigan: Mark Evans plans for winning the Detroit APBA Gold Cup Race had an unfortunate ending this weekend as he didn't anticipate traveling down the Detroit River… airborne.

As Heat 3A began Mark Evans and several other drivers were coming out of turn two and down the back stretch. Race fans looked on from the Detroit Yacht Club as Mark Evans and the Miss LLumar Window Film lifted off the river completing a full 360 degrees and landing violently, striking the bottom of the hull and remaining upright. Most of the fans and crews in the pit area were unable to view the crash because the location of the flip being blocked by a Yacht and the roostertails of water.

While the immediate focus was being directed to Mike Hanson whom had just spun out coming out of the Roostertail turn, Mark Evans in the back stretch had taken on air. Rescue crews were on the scene within minuets to evaluate the situation. Mark was found to be unconscious but in no immediate danger that might of a compromised his rescue. He was soon extracted from the boat and taken by rescue crews in an ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital. He wife Elaine Evans and boat owner Bill Wurster accompanied Mark to the hospital and was joined later by his brother, Hydroplane driver Mitch Evans and the U-8 Miss LLumar Window Film crew. Mark's spirits were immediately lifted with the greatest news of all, his brother Mitch Evans in the Miss Fox Hills Chrysler Jeep had taken the Gold Cup Race that afternoon, and dedicated the win to the recovering brother. Mark had won Heat 1A and took a 3rd place finish in Heat 2B. The LLumar Window Film Team is currently second in National high point's standings. For the Evans brothers a mutual win and victory.

N. Mark Evans is currently hospitalized at Detroit Receiving Hospital in stable condition and suffering from a mild concussion, a multiple fracture to the lower right leg, and a fractured T-5 Vertebra with some bruising to his spine. Surgery is planned this Monday morning to repair his broken leg, and a reevaluation of his back injuries will be conducted. He is in great spirits, and a full recovery expected. Mark and Elaine plan to return to Redmond, WA soon following his surgery and when Mark is stable for travel.
