The Resorts at Moses Pointe Hosts the U-8 LLumar
Unlimited Hydroplane to Test Runs on Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE, Wash. - (June 17, 2003) -- There will be rooster tails blazing along Moses Lake Friday, June 20, as the U-8 LLumar Window Film Unlimited Hydroplane, owned by Bill Wurster, makes its first test run on the xxx-acre lake in preparation for the 2003 hydroplane summer racing series, which begins in Evansville, Ind., on June 26.
The exhibition is the first time an unlimited hydro has visited Moses Lake since 1958 when Mark's dad, the legendary Norm Evans tested the U-26 Miss Moses Lake on the north arm of the lake. The exhibition is co-sponsored by The Resorts at Moses Pointe, a master planned, lakefront resort community, and The Bridges at Moses Pointe, the first recreational condominium complex to be completed at the community.
Fridays testing session will be the first time Bill Wurster's new U-8 has been "out of the box." The boat, driven by N. Mark Evans, was originally the T-4 two wing concept boat built in 1994/95. It was raced once, with Mark Evans behind the wheel, before it was taken off the circuit for a future redesign that would meet upcoming race rules, according to Richard Hagar, a member of the LLumar Window Film team with more than 35 years experience on the unlimited hydroplane racing circuit.
"85% of the boat is brand new for the 2003 racing season and we were looking for a place to test on water that was relatively calm and had little wind," said Hager. "We thought of Moses Lake, so I called a friend, Jim Donahoe at Moses Pointe, and he was able to make it happen. In just a few weeks he has arranged for the equipment and facilities necessary to move a 30 foot, 6750 pound boat in and out of the water, and to accommodate a crew of about 18 people. In fact, they've literally built a boat ramp and a pit area for us."
"Moses Lake is a perfect venue for us for another reason," said Thayer Cueter, marketing director for the U-8 team and LLumar Window Film. "We want to bring hydro racing to as many communities as possible to expose more people to the sport," she said. "Moses Lake is a great choice because it's a central location in the state and has lots of viewing spots along the shore."
The boat and crew are scheduled to arrive on Thursday, June 19. Visitors are invited to come by The Steakhouse at Moses Pointe that evening after 6 p.m. to see the boat and meet the crew, including driver N. Mark Evans and crew chief Scott Raney; who will be happy to sign autographs.
Visitors are also welcome to watch the test runs, which are expected to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and continue through the day until about 3 p.m. The boat will be loaded in at the future marina site along Westshore Drive inside The Resorts At Moses Point. There is no entrance fee and free parking is available along Westshore Drive and at The Steakhouse at Moses Pointe. Best viewing spots will be along the lake shore, close to the newly built The Bridges at Moses Pointe, the condominium development.
Donahoe, who represents both sponsors, stated, "We are very excited about hosting this exhibition. It's a perfect example of the kinds of recreation and entertainment we can help bring to the region. We have a great destination lake and golf resort in the making and it is situated along one and a half miles on Moses Lake.
"Frankly, I think Moses Lake is the most underutilized recreation lake in the state and we welcome the opportunity to let people know the many water related activities available in the area - and those that can be developed," Donahoe continued, citing future opportunities for hydroplane racing.
During the past 21 years, Bill Wurster and the U-8 Racing Team have represented major companies in Sports Marketing and Unlimited Hydroplane Racing. Some of the most notable companies include the Oberto Sausage Company, Executone Telecommunications, U S WEST Cellular, Proctor & Gamble Distributing Company and currently for the teams 7th consecutive year, LLumar Window Film, CPFilms Inc. Bill's U-8 Racing Team currently holds a world's record for their five consecutive year 2nd place finishes at the Detroit Gold Cup Regatta. N. Mark Evans, with nine race wins to his credit driving for teams including Bernie Little's U-1 Miss Budweiser and Fred Leland's Pico American Dream, returns to racing after a two-year driving hiatus. He will pilot Bill Wurster's newly acquired T-4 Unlimited hydroplane. The original T-4 two-wing conception was built in 1994/95 and debut for one race in 1995 Madison Regatta with Mark at the wheel. The newly modified T-4 LLumar hydroplane is sure to be a strong contender this 2003 racing season. For more information on the U-8 team, go to www.u-8hydro.com.
The Resorts At Moses Pointe is a new, planned lakefront golf community in Central Washington that offers 300 days of sunshine, little precipitation and is an easy drive from the Puget Sound area, Spokane or the Tri-Cities. The resort features lakefront and lake view residential lots, and The Bridges at Moses Pointe, recreational condominiums along the shore of Moses Lake. Residents and visitors can already enjoy The Links at Moses Pointe, an 18-hole championship golf course called "outstanding" in a 2000 Golf Digest survey, and the region's finest restaurant, The Steakhouse At Moses Pointe. In addition to easy access to boating, fishing, snowmobiling and concerts at The Gorge, the nearly 400-acre resort development promises a future marina, extensive hiking and bike trails, day spa, a resort hotel with attached outdoor/indoor water park, and an upscale RV facility.
